The recent announcements on the £340 million investment in the railway of the Liverpool City Region and the new franchises are great news for employers across the city region, but are not without some challenges.

Between January and June 2017, Network Rail will carry out essential renewal work on the city centre underground sections of the Wirral line. This means that Wirral line trains will not be able to serve Moorfields, Lime Street and Liverpool Central stations. At certain times, trains towards Liverpool will be unable to travel beyond Birkenhead Central and Birkenhead North.

Merseyrail, working with Network Rail, Merseytravel and other organisations, are doing everything possible to minimise disruption so Wirral line passengers can continue to travel between Liverpool city centre and Wirral, using replacement bus and Ferry services.

From autumn 2017 works will also be undertaken to improve Lime Street Station with the enhancement of platforms, tracks and signalling. Again Network Rail is working to minimise the disruption these works will bring. In addition, the new Northern and TransPennine Express train franchises came into operation on 1st April. New Northern operator Arriva Rail North Ltd and First TransPennine Express Ltd owner First Group will provide much-needed brand new, state-of-the-art trains, costing more than £800m, with the addition of more than 500 new carriages.

This breakfast briefing will enable you to find out more about what these announcements mean for your organisation, your employees and your clients.
